Ecclesiastes 11:4
“He who watches the wind will not sow and he who looks at the clouds will not reap.”
Ecclesiastes understands hesitation. It paints a familiar picture: a farmer standing in his field, watching the wind, studying the clouds, and waiting for perfect conditions before planting. The logic makes sense. What if the wind is wrong? What if the rain doesn’t come? What if the timing isn’t ideal?
So he waits.
But if he waits for certainty, he will never sow.
Generosity works the same way. We often tell ourselves we will give when the economy feels stable, when our savings reach a certain number, when we have more time, or when we feel emotionally ready. We look for guarantees and ideal conditions, but Ecclesiastes reminds us that life is unpredictable. Outcomes are uncertain. Timing is rarely perfect.
If generosity depends on ideal circumstances, it will always be postponed.
Generosity is not about surplus; it is about obedience in uncertainty. The one who waits for perfect conditions remains stuck in analysis. The one who sows participates in what God may grow. The question is not whether the wind is favorable—the question is whether we trust God enough to plant anyway.
Don’t wait for the wind to shift.
Sow.
Something to Pray
“Lord, forgive me for waiting on perfect conditions before I give. When fear and uncertainty cause me to hesitate, remind me that You are sovereign over what I cannot control. Give me courage to act in faith rather than delay in doubt. Amen.”
Something to Do
This week, stop waiting for ideal conditions.
- If you have delayed generosity because of finances, give something small but intentional.
- If you have delayed serving because you feel too busy, schedule one act of service.
- If you have delayed encouragement, send the message today.
