Sagemont Church called Pastor Matt Carter as its second lead pastor on May 17, 2020. Pastor Matt previously served as pastor of The Austin Stone Community Church in Austin, Texas. He and his wife Jennifer planted The Austin Stone in 2002, and it grew to include six campuses and 7,500 attendees every Sunday morning. We are so excited to see what God has in store for Sagemont Church under Pastor Matt's leadership. Matt and Jennifer have three children: J.D., Annie, and Samuel.

Work Experience:

The Austin Stone Community Church - Founding and Lead Pastor of Preaching and Vision (2002-present)

  • Led the church from two families and 15 college students to average weekly attendance of 7500.
  • Oversaw and led a staff of 200+ full and part-time employees with an annual budget of $24 million.
  • Of the 7500 active attenders, 4320 are involved in weekly small-group ministry.
  • The Austin Stone has grown from a central campus in Austin High School to six campuses around Austin.
  • Through its 18 year history, The Stone has sent over 270 full-time missionaries to unreached people groups around the world.
  • The average age of an Austin Stone attender is 27 and it has an active college ministry of over 3,000 college students.

The Woodlands United Methodist Church -Teaching Pastor for Contemporary Service (2001-2002)

  • Served alongside worship leader Chris Tomlin as leader/teaching pastor for a contemporary service called "The Harvest."

Miscellaneous Ministry Experience
  • Serve as guest lecturer for the Doctoral Program of expositional preaching at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.
  • Served as adjunct professor of preaching for Africa New Life Seminary in Rwanda, Africa.
  • Preached at the following conferences: Lifeway Men's, NAMB Send, Exponential, Catalyst, Worship Together, Student Life, Southern Baptists of Texas Convention, Southern Baptist Convention Pastor's Conference and many more.
  • Co-Founder of For the City network: A non-profit that connects like-minded, Christ-centered non-profits for great ministry effectiveness, growth in racial diversity, and city-wide impact.
  • Chaplain for Austin Independent School District Police Department, 2009-present.
